If required, there is a family details form that can be downloaded off the school website, please complete and return to the school office.
From the Principal

Welcome back to the school year for 2025!
All our staff were delighted to see our students return. It’s amazing to see how much they have grown and changed while relaxing over the summer holiday. Our 2025 kindies have already settled in fabulously too!
It was great to hear about all the holiday adventures before the bell went to start the school year and go into class.
We have had the benefit of extra time to plan for the term ahead and teachers feel very prepared!
We have had many new students enrol and a number leave but can confirm our planned class arrangements.
Please continue to use the seating in the grass area to wait for your children in the afternoon when the gates open for end of day pick up at 2.30pm.

Being the first newsletter of the year, much of the information contained in this newsletter is a refresher for you and has appeared in previous newsletters, but there are new dates, changed information and updated hyperlinks, so please read each section.
I have included lots of information about start the school year including:
- Class Organisation
- Communication
- Staffing for 2025
- Playground
- Hats + Uniform
- Voluntary School Contributions 2025
- Other Costs
- Meet Your Child’s Teacher
- Money Collection
- Wildlife Alert
- Volunteering
- Raising Concerns
Class Organisation
Although children were placed into classes on a tentative basis last year, if we enrol more students over the next week or so, we may need to form an extra Stage 2 class as numbers of new enrolments have been concentrated in this group. This will mean that we may move some students to form four smaller classes. This is unlikely, but we know you’d appreciate a heads up, just in case.
Each year we anticipate student numbers and class groupings based on information you provide and historical data; most years we get it right – it is not an exact science.
Communication
The school communicates with parents mainly through the parent portal, our newsletter and individual letters sent home with students.
The Sentral Parent Portal has been our main method of communication between class teachers and families. The portal and newsletter are still the main methods of communicating whole school information. Please contact the school for an access code to sign up to the parent portal and remember that a changed email address needs to be advised so that you can maintain ongoing access to the portal.
The school does not operate a Facebook page and the Parents and Citizens Association will often repost information from the school to their page to help keep you informed too.
The newsletter is published fortnightly on Friday through the parent portal and emailed to your most current email address. The newsletter link on the website is being updated.
The school website contains general information and will continue to be updated – thank you Mrs Hird for your amazing work.
Should you need to contact the school, please use the phone numbers above. The school does not have an answering machine. Therefore, your personal call during office hours is considered our official means of communication.
It is very important to note that the parent portal should not be considered an instant messaging service and should not be used for very important and time-bound communication as teachers only monitor this as their working and personal schedules permit. Any important information that requires quick response or action should continue to be communicated by phone during office hours. Individual teachers will advise you of their personal preference, including times, for reviewing and responding to portal messages.
The school also receives your communication (and many others) by email on the above address. However, school email is checked daily before 8.30am and any communication received later that day can only be acted upon the next school day.
As I am the only non-teaching executive, I am available to see parents by appointment after 9.30am most days and these can be made through the office. Along with the school executive, I hope you understand that our priority is school organisation, teachers and students before the start of the school day and we may not be able to see you unless pre-arranged.
Miss Andrew, who has responsibility for whole school aspects of learning and wellbeing and supervising Stage 1, has some flexibility to schedule appointments with families to discuss concerns and questions in the afternoon. However, Mrs Bissett (supervising Stage 3), Mrs Wicks (supervising Stage 2), and Mrs Gbel-Cook (supervising the support classes) have teaching loads and will generally be unavailable during the school day at short notice to meet with you or return phone calls.
Teaching staff are pleased to make appointments for telephone interviews any time a request is made. There is an opportunity for a student-led conference in the last two weeks of first term each year or the first two weeks of Term 2, where progress can be discussed and learning goals for the year set and a formal parent-teacher interview time in the first two weeks of Term 3 after Semester 2 reports have gone home. We anticipate that we will use face-to-face and online video-conferencing options again to hold these meetings as it was convenient for families.
Official office hours are from 8.15am to 3.00pm. Before, or after these times, the office phone is not answered as school staff may not be in the office area and there is no answering machine.
Staffing
I am delighted that we can offer the opportunity to our predominantly female workforce, to job share while they raise families and shoulder other family responsibilities. Our teachers are an expert group and although they may share their teaching roles, I can assure you that continuity of learning is their priority. However, these job share arrangements complicate communication between families and teachers on the portal. Miss Andrew will provide advice about the best way to use the portal so you can communicate with your child’s teachers.

Attendance
We have a saying here, “If you send them every day, on time and ready to learn, we can teach them!
Being at school on time and every day (unless unwell), enables continuity of learning with no gaps in critical literacy and numeracy skills that widen as students get older, maintains friendships and builds critical social skills that kids need to navigate adolescence and beyond and creates good routines, habits and practices for working life.
The bell goes at 8.50am and learning starts as students line up in the COLA:
- they learn to use whole body listening to focus on one teacher giving instructions;
- they get to hear about what’s happening in the school day and can plan;
- they learn to follow directions as they walk to class with their teachers;
If a child walks through the school gate after 8:50am they are late and need to go to the office to get a late note BEFORE heading to class.
Please use the Sentral Parent Portal to notify us of any absences, including late arrivals as students cannot explain their own absences.
We’re aiming for 95% or better attendance for EVERY learner this year!
Playground
The Avoca Drive pedestrian gate is open for student entry only to school in the mornings. Students may also use the Kimbarra Close main office gate and the stair gate to enter school in the mornings. Parents and carers are welcome to come into the school grounds and remain in the grassed area adjacent to the office block in the morning until the 8:50am bell goes.
All children should go to the COLA area on arrival at school. Children may then play on the asphalt and/or grass area below the COLA when supervision commences at 8.20am. No children are to go to classrooms to put bags away before heading to the playground.
The playground equipment and construction zone cannot be used for at least the first couple of weeks until all students have had their orientation to safe use conducted by class teachers.
Hats + Uniform
Please assist school staff in the implementation of the school’s sun protection policy. A broad brimmed hat, with a brim of at least 7cm, is the only approved style of hat to be worn at all times while on the school playground. These are available from the school’s uniform shop at reasonable cost and in uniform colour.
It is the school community’s expectation that students will wear correct uniform. Approved uniform is only available through the school’s uniform shop and is the ONLY official supplier of our uniform. Use the Sentral Student Pay option to place orders which are then delivered to classrooms.
Voluntary School Contributions
After Week 6 of Term 1 a letter will be sent home for school contributions. These costs are very reasonable at $35 per student or $70 per family (and have not changed for many years). I must stress that these costs are voluntary and should any family wish to contribute this, or any other amount, we will do our best to direct the contribution to students in need.
Other Costs
This year, to make the transition back to school easier for families we will only be invoicing families for the Mathletics subscription and the stationery bookpack will be distributed at no cost. This online interactive maths program can be accessed at school and at home for 2025. Following payment, students will be issued a password which entitles them to full access for the year – at home and at school. Payment is required as soon as possible to begin homework.
The stationery pack provides enough material for the year and is stored in the classroom.
Advice about proposed excursion costs will be sent home in the next couple of weeks and posted on the website. To help spread the costs, parents of children in Stages 2 and 3 can begin to send in prepayments to cover the costs of the major excursions at any time.
Changes to our Library and the Kimbarra Close Pedestrian Gate
Mrs Griffiths is excited to be implementing some big changes to our library this term. We will be modernising the way we arrange our library collection to make it more appealing to our readers. Library fixtures will be moved and the book collection updated and set out to encourage borrowing. In the first few weeks of this term, we will restrict borrowing during class time to enable our school team to undertake some work and Mrs Griffiths will deliver lessons in classrooms. By the end of February the new-look library will re-open and we will have it open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school for students and parents to come and choose books together, read together and enjoy the new space.
There is work being undertaken at the front gate to install a new buzz-in and out system. Please be patient as we undertake and complete the work.
Meeting Your Child’s Teacher on Thursday morning 20 February
This informal opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and find out how their classroom works is combined with a light breakfast. We will have breakfast items for sale between 8:20am and 8:50am. More details to come.
There will be two sessions at 9:00am, then 9:30am so that if you have children in different stages, you can attend a relevant session. Each teacher’s presentation will be saved in the portal documents so you can access the information after the session or if you can’t attend.
This opportunity is for parents of students in Kindergarten, Stages 1, 2 and 3, and our support classes to have an informal meet and greet and build connections with teachers and other parents.
Money Collection
You can easily pay for any school costs (including any canteen and uniform orders) through the Sentral Parent Portal app.
Children can still bring cash for over-the-counter sales from the canteen. Our canteen manager notifies me of any students presenting at the canteen with notes over $10 in denomination just in case parents are unaware that a large amount is at school.
Wildlife Alert
At the beginning of the school year after a period of no students to disturb them, all sorts of wildlife (snakes, wasps, spiders, lizards) are likely to come out to find shade or food. School is no different to anywhere else, so please remind your children to be aware and alert to possible danger.
PS – Mosquitoes are particularly abundant in summer too, so combination sunscreen and insect repellent is a great way to protect your child from the sun and the biting insects. Please apply before school and pop a small tube/roll-on in your child’s bag so they can refresh it during the day.
Volunteers
Many of you have skills and talents that could enhance what we can offer here at school and we look forward to your offer of time and assistance sometime in the future.
So that all volunteers are aware of their special responsibilities under school policy, we will be holding an induction session mid Term 1 for new volunteers.
Volunteers require a current Working With Children Check Declaration and to provide approved identification and attendance at an induction session before commencing in any volunteering role at Kincumber Public School.
At this session you will be informed about the school’s volunteer and community conduct approaches and be able provide us with approved identification and sign a declaration.
The session dates and information will be communicated through the parent portal.
Concerns
I extend a reminder to all that if at any time you find that you have a concern about anything to do with the school, you are encouraged to come to the school and tell someone so that your concern can be resolved. It is our aim to work with all of our school community to ensure that we do the very best we can to ensure a productive, safe and enjoyable experience for our students. Office staff will direct your enquiry to the staff member with responsibility for the area of your concern
However, should you feel that you must raise a concern formally, the NSW Department of Education has procedures for ensuring that complaints are handled fairly. Information is available on the Department’s website at:
A link to the school information handbook is provided further in this newsletter.
Welcome back - have a great year at our great school!

New Ethics Day and Time
Could you be an ethics teacher for Kincumber Public School? We are seeking volunteers so that we can provide ethics classes for all the families who have requested it for their children.
Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the ethics program. Training consists of a two day workshop and short online modules. Lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be available at 11.30am Fridays each week.
In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure.
Children discuss topic such as:
- imagining how others feel
- how do we treat living things?
- what is laziness?
- how do we disagree in a respectful way?
- fairness
If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au or contact Julia Kosheleva on 0402 414 041 or Julia.kosheleva@primaryethics.com.au

Please see below a parent fact sheet on "Changes to the enrolment policy".
Lost Property
Lost property is now located in the school office.
Please make sure that your children’s school jackets and hats are labelled with their full name, not initials, in legible writing as this makes it easier to return the item of clothing to your child if found.
Unclaimed items will be donated to charity if not claimed at the end of each term.

Little Friends Scholarship Program - Applications are Now Open
Imagine you’re a child who has suddenly lost your home and all your possessions because you’ve had to flee domestic or family violence. Imagine how alone this child feels, the trauma they’ve experienced. Like every other child, they not only want to feel safe, secure and loved, they also want to fit in, not stand out from their peers. Maybe they've even had to change schools and make new friends.
Made to feel different because they no longer have the right uniform or school shoes, or their parent can’t afford to pay for a laptop, school excursions, or the long-awaited school camp. Maybe they’ve had to drop out of the music lessons or sporting competitions they once attended and loved to be part of.
This is where the Little Friends Scholarship Program comes in to support our youngest Australians who have already been through so much.
An initiative of Friends with Dignity, these valuable scholarships help fund education and extracurricular activities for five to 18-year-olds, putting children affected by domestic or family violence on an equal footing with their peers.
Scholarships are up to a maximum value of $500 per child.
If you have families within your school community or support community who are financially disadvantaged due to domestic or family violence, we encourage you to inform these families about the scholarship program and support them in submitting their application for funding to assist them with the cost of educational and extra-curricular expenses for their child/ren.
More information about the Little Friends Scholarship Program and access to the online application can be found below.

What is the School Student Broadband Initiative?

One lesson that schools and the government learned from the "learning from home" periods in 2020 and 2021 was that not all students had access to effective and reliable internet services. As a result, many students were strongly disadvantaged, impacting the continuity of their education.
Did you know that the Australian Government in conjunction with the NBN, offer the School Student Broadband Initiative to address this gap? If your school has any students that live in an area that can access the NBN, but do not currently have an NBN service at home, please let them know about the initiative.
Eligible families will be provided with home internet service at no cost until 31 December 2025, through a participating internet provider over the National Broadband Network. The link above provides all the necessary information for eligible families to take advantage of this initiative.

School Student Travel Information for Parents and Students
School Travel Passes
Applications are now open for 2025 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel.
Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their School Opal card at their nominated postal address from mid-January 2025.
Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.
In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.
Students living in rural and regional areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some rural and regional operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.
Terms of Use
Students using School Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use.
This includes travel within the approved times between 6.30am and 7.00pm from Monday to Friday on school days only. Students must use their Child/Youth Opal card for any travel outside these times.
All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.
Apply now for 2025 School Opal Cards

Attendance Matters
Research highlights a clear correlation between student attendance and positive student outcomes. This research tells us that students with an attendance rate above 90% have greater academic and social success. Parents can view term attendance rates for their child/ren in the Sentral Attendance portal.
ALL student absences must be explained within 7 days, this is a Department of Education policy. Parents can lodge student absences through the Sentral Parent Portal at any time within the 7 days.

Online Enrolment System
The Online Enrolment System is designed to provide flexibility for parents to submit an Application to Enrol in a NSW Government School online at the time that best suits you. The application can be accessed on all browsers and mobile devices including iOS and Android.
The online application process is currently available to:
- Local and out of area enrolments
- Children who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
- Children who live in NSW
We offer our support and encourage you to complete your application to enrol online. If however, you do not feel comfortable completing an application online, a paper copy will be available for collection from the front office or can be downloaded from the Department’s going to a public school site.
Parent Portal
Kincumber Public School uses the Sentral ‘Parent Portal’ for a variety of communication purposes.
We broadcast messages to the whole school, stages, individual classes and students. This might include reminders for upcoming events, excursions and may also include notes.
Parents are able to use 2-way messaging for important but not urgent communication regarding student wellbeing and learning. This should not be considered an instant messaging service as teachers DO NOT receive notifications and will only get them after logging into our system at a convenient time during the school day. We understand that many families have flexible working hours and will need to send or respond to portal information at a time convenient to them. We also expect that families will understand that teachers will manage communications to you in the same way.
You can download the Sentral Parent Portal to your smart phone and receive notifications to help you stay up to date with what’s happening in school.

Road Safety – a Shared Responsibility
When thinking about road safety, what is shared responsibility?
It’s a way for us, individually, to ensure the safety of everyone in our community.
Central Coast Council regularly reviews the environment around our many schools, improving areas such as the setup of parking restrictions or the upgrading of crossings. Supporting schools to educate their school community about road safety outside schools is also a role of our Council.
Everyone in the school community - parents, grandparents, carers, teachers, students, bus drivers, crossing supervisors and motorists passing through the area – all have a responsibility for the road safety of our children.
Please consider the following to help keep the members of your school community safe
- If you drop off or pick up children to or from school, please follow the Road Rules
- There are designated areas that allow for parking but there are also areas that do not allow parking
- Pedestrian and / or School Crossings provide the safest options for crossing the road
- Speed limits are set at 40 km/hour to help keep people around school areas - especially children - safe.
Road safety around schools is about shared responsibility. Addressing road safety issues are not always about needing more parking spaces.
Children are great imitators so please set a good example and model safe behaviour.
The Safe System Approach to Road Safety has been adopted in NSW. The following is taken from the NSW Towards Zero Road Safety Campaign:
People are at the heart of the safe system approach to road safety.
Road safety is a shared responsibility – everyone needs to make safe decisions on and around the road to prioritise safety.
All road users owe it to themselves and to everyone else on the road to follow the road rules and drive to the conditions. Crashes can be prevented, and lives can be saved, by making safe choices.
