If required, there is a family details form that can be downloaded off the school website, please complete and return to the school office.
From the Principal

This week:
- New Gate Operation
- Swimming Carnival
- Library Changes
- PLPs
- Government Initiatives to Address Staff Wellbeing
- Volunteers
- Possible Class Changes
- Attendance
- P & C Recognition Day

New Gate Operation
You may have noticed that the main pedestrian gate now swings inwards and has a strong closer and magnetic latch and the buzz-in and out fixtures are not yet ready to work. From next Monday, you will need to use the buzzer to request access and to leave the site between 8.50am and 2.30pm.
Outside of these hours, the gate operates by pushing inwards to come in and by pulling towards you by grasping one of the vertical pickets when exiting. There is no need to touch the bolt that secures the gate when fully open during entry and exit times.
These enhanced security features assist us to manage our emergency drills, child protection responsibilities with regard to knowing who is on site and student safety and visitor check-ins.

Swimming Carnival
Thank you to the school staff who organised a great swimming carnival this year. The rigour around managing a school carnival is very different from when I went to school, when the entire school jumped in at the end of the day for a free swim regardless of swimming ability.
Because of the short turnaround for entry and feedback from some parents, we re-opened the entries. However, this actually created enormous pressure for school staff to finalise all the arrangements necessary and regrettably gave no leeway at the end to ensure that permissions and payments matched entries, and some families still missed out.
This was an unintended outcome because we re-opened the entries and I want to advise that for next year’s carnival, the cut-off date for entering your child into events will be advised in Term 4 and put on the portal calendar and will NOT be varied. If swimming in the carnival is important to you and your child, please ensure that your portal access is up to date and that you receive the action notifications.

Library Changes
We are very close to finalising some very big changes to the library. The new layout ensures that when you enter the library the books are displayed in an appealing way, and it invites you to browse and sit with a book. The library teaching space has been re-organised to cater for small groups and larger groups. The book collection has been re-organised to ensure accessibility to resources that are relevant to class work, of interest to boys and girls and up-to-date.
In the near future, the library will be open before school from 8.20am to 8.50am on Tuesdays and Thursdays for students to browse and borrow independently or for parents to accompany their child to sit and read together and borrow.
Stay tuned for the grand re-opening!
PLPs
Our staff acknowledge that the land that we work and learn on at Kincumber Public School, was, is and always will be Aboriginal land.
Our school has students who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and we want to do our best to support them to achieve their very best. One way that schools do this is for each student to have a personalised learning pathway (PLP) that includes a range of academic and social goals along with cultural goals.
So that we can collaborate with families in developing these cultural goals, we held a successful PLP planning afternoon tea yesterday.
The afternoon began with the official unveiling of the incredible artwork of former KPS student, Jasmine Steward, which has been turned into a large display in the COLA playground for all to see.

Teachers, families and students worked on shared goals. Students had already told us the ways in which they wanted their successes celebrated, with most suggesting a certificate at assembly or a phone call home were preferred.
Thank you to our Aboriginal Education Team led by Mrs Follett, for coordinating the afternoon.
Providing Time to Switch Off - The Right to Disconnect
|
This year, teaching staff have reduced meeting times, and all staff enjoy the right to disconnect from communications outside of work hours, including portal messages, and emails as we work to address the wellbeing of staff at Kincumber Public School. In addition to this, our school executive team have had their teaching loads increased and they are less available at short notice.
I am very appreciative of the extra personal time teachers put in to offer extracurricular activities, including team sports, dance, chess, etc. At the upcoming school camp, teaching staff will give up personal and family time to attend and provide the experience out of good will – they do not get paid overtime or have time off in lieu. The only incentive is to ensure our students have a great time and learn lots.

Volunteers
We are holding our first parent induction for volunteers before the P&C AGM on 17 March. It is face-to-face only and is refreshed annually. If you have previously completed the required declaration, there is no need to complete another.
There are some priority school programs that need your help urgently.
- Our breakfast program is free and open to all students and operates every day of the week from the canteen. Ms Stafford needs some keen and reliable volunteers to train up to co-ordinate the service. Please reach out to her to express interest by calling the school and putting your name down.
- Our canteen needs volunteers to assist with packing and serving so that Melissa (our canteen manager) can spend more time making healthy made-at-school items to reduce costs and keep our canteen open five days a week.
- Our garden club needs volunteers to help maintain the garden and support Miss McPhee’s farm shop. This is the result of our programs to help develop the social and emotional learning skills to collaborate and engage with classroom learning.
- Our library could use your help to cover books, process library returns and reshelve books.
Possible Class Changes
In the last newsletter, I alerted you to some potential changes to class structures because of increasing enrolments in Stage 2. We will enrol several more students in Stage 2 in the coming weeks, so executive staff are considering the best way to manage this with the least disruption across the school.

Attendance
Our target again this year is to get more students attending better than 90% of the time and there have been some outstanding improvements from some students and credit to their families.
In addition to the whole day attendance target we are really keen to see an improvement in punctuality in the mornings.
The bell to start the school day is 8.50am (every single day). During the school term, having set morning routines and times for everyone to be ready for school are very important, especially when you have children attending more than one school. Many families tell me that making lunches and setting out things for breakfast the next day are easily turned into a “night before” routine.
If your child walks in the gate after the bell has gone at 8.50am, and the duty teacher has left, then they are late and need to get a late note from the office – even if it is 8.51! Planning to leave a little earlier so that children can arrive on time is a great “job-ready” skill to learn.
Why is good attendance important? It’s simple really, the more you are at school and in class, the more you learn; gaps in learning are reduced, children experience more success in learning and are motivated by their continuing learning success. (Of course, there are other important social reasons too!).
Teachers will contact you to request explanations for absences if they haven’t been provided. They will also make decisions about what counts as a justified absence, and these are generally absences due to being sick or unavoidable and unplanned emergencies.
Teachers use a variety of attendance data, including looking for patterns of absences, sibling attendance to identify problem attendance and will contact you to discuss how they can help, particularly if your child has five or more whole day absences in a semester. You can review your child’s attendance on the Sentral Parent Portal and read about why Every Day Counts at the link below ...
Please be at school every day and on time to make the most of the learning opportunities!

Together For School Communities P&C Day - 5 March, 2025
Next week, on the first Wednesday in March, is P&C Recognition Day. This year’s theme, Together For School Communities, is a celebration of the connection and collaboration that P&Cs champion every day.
P&Cs play a vital role in school life by bringing everyone into the conversation and fostering a sense of shared ownership in the school’s success. Together, these efforts create schools that are vibrant, inclusive, and full of possibility.
P&C Day is our moment to say thank you. Thank you to the volunteers who give their time, energy, and ideas. Thank you to the leaders who step up to represent their schools. Thank you to the teachers, principals, and staff who collaborate with P&Cs to make schools places where everyone can thrive.
Our P&C does so much to support our school, our students and our staff and we thank you!
Hope you had a great week at our great school!

We're so lucky to have our school canteen available for lunch and recess orders Monday to Friday. To help make ordering a breeze, here are our top tips:
- Double-check the date
Before finalising your order, make sure you've selected the correct day. We don't want any hungry tummies or sad faces. - Toping up funds
If you need to add money to your account, don't forget to jump back into the app and finalise your child's lunch order - it won't process automatically. - Order early
Placing your order the night before can help avoid last-minute rushes.
Thank you for supporting our canteen team - they do an amazing job keeping our kids fed and happy.

Year 7 Expression of Interest
Attention all Parents/Carers of Year 6 students
To enrol your child in Year 7 for 2026, you will need to complete an Expression of Interest for Year 6 to Year 7 transition. The Expression of Interest (EOI) lets you indicate which school(s) you would like your child to attend in Year 7. The EOI process is now available online and will close Friday March 28, 2025.
After you submit an EOI and it has been assessed, your child will be offered a place at a high school. If you are unsure whether they will be attending a NSW Government school (you've applied for a private school, or you are moving interstate), we ask that you still complete an EOI for your local government school and then follow up once a decision has been made.
The online process will guide you through your options and collect the information required to make the process as smooth as possible. Please follow the link below to complete the EOI process.
https://year7.enrol.education.nsw.gov.au/?schoolCode=2304
For parents/carers who are not able to complete an application online or have questions regarding the process, please contact Ms Kelly Bissett – Stage 3 Assistant Principal through the portal or by phoning the front office.
Athletics Help Required
We are looking for volunteers to help with our Term 1, 2025 Athletics Training Program.

NSW Health Primary School Dental Program
NSW Health are offering free dental check-up and preventive care to all students as part of a school-based mobile dental program. Children should have their teeth checked by their first birthday and every year after that.
The Dental Van will be at Kincumber Public School from the 3 March to 18 March, 2025.
New Ethics Day and Time
Could you be an ethics teacher for Kincumber Public School? We are seeking volunteers so that we can provide ethics classes for all the families who have requested it for their children.
Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the ethics program. Training consists of a two day workshop and short online modules. Lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be available at 11.30am Fridays each week.
In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure.
Children discuss topic such as:
- imagining how others feel
- how do we treat living things?
- what is laziness?
- how do we disagree in a respectful way?
- fairness
If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school, please visit www.primaryethics.com.au or contact Julia Kosheleva on 0402 414 041 or Julia.kosheleva@primaryethics.com.au
Changes to the NSW Department of Education’s enrolment policy for 2025
Please see below a parent fact sheet on "Changes to the enrolment policy".
Lost Property
Lost property is now located in the school office.
Please make sure that your children’s school jackets and hats are labelled with their full name, not initials, in legible writing as this makes it easier to return the item of clothing to your child if found.
Unclaimed items will be donated to charity if not claimed at the end of each term.

P&C News
Good afternoon! I hope Term 1 is off to a great start for you and your children.
Air Conditioning Project
Our main fundraising goal this year is to install air conditioning at KPS. We’re one of the few schools on the Central Coast without it, and although we’ve been on the NSW Government Cooler Classrooms program for years, progress has been slow.
We’ve started the process, but it will take time. Here’s what’s ahead:
- Electrical Audit: We’ve begun this step to assess power capacity. The P&C is covering the audit costs.
- Power Upgrade: After the audit, we’ll know the scope and costs for the upgrades.
- Air-conditioning Installation: The estimated cost for all classrooms is over $140k, so it may be phased in.
This will be a long-term project, and we’ll keep you updated. Some members are also lobbying for grants to help fund this.
How You Can Help? We’ll allocate most of our fundraising to this cause. Any support—financial, volunteering, donations or through our Return & Earn program—is appreciated. We’re also seeking business sponsors, who will be recognized for their contributions.
Election BBQ
We’re hosting an Election Day BBQ to raise funds for air conditioning. The KPS school hall will be a polling booth, and all BBQ profits will go to the project. Please encourage the community to vote and support the BBQ!
Can You Help? We need volunteers for cooking, prepping, and clean-up. Whether you can help for an hour or the whole day, your support is vital! Please email admin@kpspc.onmicrosoft.com to volunteer.
Volunteer Induction Training
Every year volunteers need to attend a one-hour volunteer session before they can volunteer at the school.
Volunteering can include:
- Canteen duties, breakfast club
- Helping at P&C events on school grounds
- Helping a teacher in the classroom or for school events
- Library help and garden club
A volunteer induction training session is always held before the P&C AGM. If you’d like to attend, add to your diary 6pm, 17 March 2025, in the teacher's staffroom. For any questions on the requirements, please call the school.
P&C Annual General Meeting (AGM)
Following the training, we’ll hold our P&C AGM to present annual reports, elect executive roles, and renew memberships (gold coin donation). You will need to be a current member to nominate or vote.
Executive roles to be filled are President, Treasurer, Secretary and two Vice Presidents.
Afterward, a regular P&C meeting will follow.
For any questions or to get involved, please email admin@kpspc.onmicrosoft.com
I hope to see you on Monday 17 March.
Kind regards,
Belinda Cusack
KPS P&C President
P&C Treasurer Position Available
The P&C is currently looking for a Treasurer. If you're interested in taking on this important role, we'd love to hear from you! Please contact admin@kpspc.onmicrosoft.com

Little Friends Scholarship Program - Applications are Now Open
Imagine you’re a child who has suddenly lost your home and all your possessions because you’ve had to flee domestic or family violence. Imagine how alone this child feels, the trauma they’ve experienced. Like every other child, they not only want to feel safe, secure and loved, they also want to fit in, not stand out from their peers. Maybe they've even had to change schools and make new friends.
Made to feel different because they no longer have the right uniform or school shoes, or their parent can’t afford to pay for a laptop, school excursions, or the long-awaited school camp. Maybe they’ve had to drop out of the music lessons or sporting competitions they once attended and loved to be part of.
This is where the Little Friends Scholarship Program comes in to support our youngest Australians who have already been through so much.
An initiative of Friends with Dignity, these valuable scholarships help fund education and extracurricular activities for five to 18-year-olds, putting children affected by domestic or family violence on an equal footing with their peers.
Scholarships are up to a maximum value of $500 per child.
If you have families within your school community or support community who are financially disadvantaged due to domestic or family violence, we encourage you to inform these families about the scholarship program and support them in submitting their application for funding to assist them with the cost of educational and extra-curricular expenses for their child/ren.
More information about the Little Friends Scholarship Program and access to the online application can be found below.

Quick Reference Guides for Parents
What is the School Student Broadband Initiative?

One lesson that schools and the government learned from the "learning from home" periods in 2020 and 2021 was that not all students had access to effective and reliable internet services. As a result, many students were strongly disadvantaged, impacting the continuity of their education.
Did you know that the Australian Government in conjunction with the NBN, offer the School Student Broadband Initiative to address this gap? If your school has any students that live in an area that can access the NBN, but do not currently have an NBN service at home, please let them know about the initiative.
Eligible families will be provided with home internet service at no cost until 31 December 2025, through a participating internet provider over the National Broadband Network. The link above provides all the necessary information for eligible families to take advantage of this initiative.

School Student Travel Information for Parents and Students
School Travel Passes
Applications are now open for 2025 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel.
Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their School Opal card at their nominated postal address from mid-January 2025.
Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.
In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.
Students living in rural and regional areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some rural and regional operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.
Terms of Use
Students using School Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use.
This includes travel within the approved times between 6.30am and 7.00pm from Monday to Friday on school days only. Students must use their Child/Youth Opal card for any travel outside these times.
All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.

Attendance Matters
Research highlights a clear correlation between student attendance and positive student outcomes. This research tells us that students with an attendance rate above 90% have greater academic and social success. Parents can view term attendance rates for their child/ren in the Sentral Attendance portal.
ALL student absences must be explained within 7 days, this is a Department of Education policy. Parents can lodge student absences through the Sentral Parent Portal at any time within the 7 days.

Online Enrolment System
The Online Enrolment System is designed to provide flexibility for parents to submit an Application to Enrol in a NSW Government School online at the time that best suits you. The application can be accessed on all browsers and mobile devices including iOS and Android.
The online application process is currently available to:
- Local and out of area enrolments
- Children who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
- Children who live in NSW
We offer our support and encourage you to complete your application to enrol online. If however, you do not feel comfortable completing an application online, a paper copy will be available for collection from the front office or can be downloaded from the Department’s going to a public school site.
Parent Portal
Kincumber Public School uses the Sentral ‘Parent Portal’ for a variety of communication purposes.
We broadcast messages to the whole school, stages, individual classes and students. This might include reminders for upcoming events, excursions and may also include notes.
Parents are able to use 2-way messaging for important but not urgent communication regarding student wellbeing and learning. This should not be considered an instant messaging service as teachers DO NOT receive notifications and will only get them after logging into our system at a convenient time during the school day. We understand that many families have flexible working hours and will need to send or respond to portal information at a time convenient to them. We also expect that families will understand that teachers will manage communications to you in the same way.
You can download the Sentral Parent Portal to your smart phone and receive notifications to help you stay up to date with what’s happening in school.

Road Safety – a Shared Responsibility
When thinking about road safety, what is shared responsibility?
It’s a way for us, individually, to ensure the safety of everyone in our community.
Central Coast Council regularly reviews the environment around our many schools, improving areas such as the setup of parking restrictions or the upgrading of crossings. Supporting schools to educate their school community about road safety outside schools is also a role of our Council.
Everyone in the school community - parents, grandparents, carers, teachers, students, bus drivers, crossing supervisors and motorists passing through the area – all have a responsibility for the road safety of our children.
Please consider the following to help keep the members of your school community safe
- If you drop off or pick up children to or from school, please follow the Road Rules
- There are designated areas that allow for parking but there are also areas that do not allow parking
- Pedestrian and / or School Crossings provide the safest options for crossing the road
- Speed limits are set at 40 km/hour to help keep people around school areas - especially children - safe.
Road safety around schools is about shared responsibility. Addressing road safety issues are not always about needing more parking spaces.
Children are great imitators so please set a good example and model safe behaviour.
The Safe System Approach to Road Safety has been adopted in NSW. The following is taken from the NSW Towards Zero Road Safety Campaign:
People are at the heart of the safe system approach to road safety.
Road safety is a shared responsibility – everyone needs to make safe decisions on and around the road to prioritise safety.
All road users owe it to themselves and to everyone else on the road to follow the road rules and drive to the conditions. Crashes can be prevented, and lives can be saved, by making safe choices.
